Senior Account Director: PR & Communications – Johannesburg

An award-winning integrated communications and public relations agency is on the lookout for a dynamic Senior Account Director for their Johannesburg office. The agency specialises in helping companies build and protect their brands and reputations; it is part of an international group renowned as a global leader in marketing, communications and business transformation. This exciting role encompasses leadership, client service, Account Direction and Strategic Thinking and Planning, Business Development and People Development. We’re looking for someone special with great previous PR consultancy experience and extensive media contacts. The ideal candidate has ‘corporate’ client experience.

 

Responsibilities

  • Play an integral role in strategic development and growth of the agency
  • Provide input into key staffing decisions and team resources
  • Take responsibility for operational issues within the Group – acting as support to Director
  • Demonstrate communications insight: Develop and deliver integrated communications trends-themed presentation
  • Source of leadership to junior staff in the agency
  • Identify and motivate new ways of working, both creatively and operationally
  • Identify new client leads
  • Seek and develop opportunities for organic growth of existing business (cross-selling services)
  • Hold in-depth knowledge of competitive landscape
  • Build high-level analytical and research skills
  • New business process (from inception to completion) – part of entire pitch process, conduct research, prepare credentials
  • Draft new business proposals, strategy docs, client reviews, social media proposals (edits)
  • Development of strategic and tactical client programmes – beyond media relations
  • Draft and research quality-based media releases
  • Oversee team editing of media releases across entire portfolio
  • Solidify relationships with top journalists/media relations (senior correspondents)
  • Assist with creation, conception, and presentation of integrated communications campaigns
  • Interpret the direction of strategy/planning and creative leads
  • Communicate and coordinate client service, production and strategy/planning teams ensuring that community strategy supports overall brand goals and objectives
  • Utilise social listening tools to generate insights and suggest new ideas and tactics
  • Involvement in crisis communication services, strategy development and planning on behalf of clients
  • Participate in and ensure account managers effectively manage and run monthly status meetings/reporting
  • Develop a consultancy/advisory capability with client wherever possible
  • Drive strategy for clients on a monthly basis with team
  • Relationship building initiatives with client
  • Builds high level knowledge of client’s market sector
  • Demonstrates innovation and creativity
  • The Newsroom: Manage your team during editorial meetings; ensure value is being added across entire client portfolio
  • Work with Associate Director to finalise programme and budgets for client
  • Assume accountability for financial aspects of cost management on client programmes; aware of financial status and accounts at all times
  • Identifies early account problems and acts/advises solutions, in conjunction with Director
  • Supports Associate Director to ensure smooth integration of new business and smooth running of existing accounts
  • Supports company culture; actively seeks new, smarter ways of doing things
  • Is seen as an ambassador for the company
  • Fully understands the Group structure internationally and acts as an ambassador for the South African office among peer offices
  • Monitoring junior members of the team and ensure account managers are effectively mentoring junior staff
  • Setting team objectives, conducting job objectives appraisals
  • Reviewing team resources/workloads – advising Director as to any possible problems /requesting additional resources
  • Best practice: Become a mentor/coach for 1 x junior (possibly in their portfolio/stream)
  • Contribute to and participate in personal development activities for junior staff

 

Requirements
The successful candidate must have/be:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification
  • Previous PR consultancy experience – essential
  • Extensive media contacts – essential
  • Corporate client experience
  • Able to lead and manage a small team
  • An ability to apply communications techniques beyond media relations in response to client briefs, including viral and web PR techniques
  • An ability to write persuasively, creatively pitch stories and identify / develop story opportunities
  • Excellent communication skills: express ideas and articulate concepts, recommendations, etc. in client or team meetings
  • A self-starter
  • Innovative and creative
  • Knowledge of the various social media channels used by clients, generate content for these platforms, manage them according to client guidelines and nurture relationships with influencers
