A very exciting position has become available at a fabulous Marketing agency for a Client Service/Business Development Director. The role can be based at either their Johannesburg or Cape Town offices. In this role you will be responsible for leading, inspiring, setting direction and driving the Business Development and Client service team to provide excellent client services. You will manage the delivery of exceptional creative product that meets or exceeds the client’s business needs as well as exceeding target income for the agency within agreed margins.  Reporting to the MD, you will have the Account Executive, Communications & PR specialist, Events Manager reporting to you. It is essential that you have advertising or marketing agency experience under your belt. Encompassing Business Management, People, Financial Client Management and Business Development this position calls for someone experienced with great leadership abilities and the drive to be continuously learning as the industry evolves.   • To set and direct the delivery of the income targets for overall budget achievement and business development strategy
  • To ensure the implementation and management of a client database system to maximise client communication, management and business development opportunities
  • Deliver business initiatives that enhance the development skills, knowledge and good practice in the agency including new product development and implementation
  • Through research and actively networking within the industry, ensure that the agency is at the forefront of strategic planning and innovation and that this is shared across your peer group and throughout your team
  • Develop, review and report on the sales and client service environments monthly
  • Actively pursue business development opportunities with client accounts, cross selling additional services whenever possible
  • Drive the delivery of new business into the agency through leadership or involvement of pitch project work and delivery
  • Identify areas of growth on existing business and new business including the identification of expos, events and networking opportunities
  • Ensure all client liaison is managed effectively in line with the standards required for optimal client relationships
  • To ensure clear understanding of the client’s strategic and operational requirements and communicate this to the team
  • Identify and analyse dimensions of brand positions and determine marketing strategy
  • Through close relationships with the clients, continuously develop the strategic direction of each client account and ensure communication of any directional changes to the team
  • Deliver high standards of client satisfaction, measuring this through feedback, surveys, response to campaigns and continuously adapting and adjusting approaches to benefit client needs
  • Drive the Account team so that they maximise the opportunity with clients through the range of services that are available within the agency, including creative, strategic planning, production etc., building the strength of the business relationship through delivery of value added services to the benefit of the client
  • Plan and implement thought leadership sessions for clients
  • Ensure that all briefs are well taken, detailed & communicated and captured accordingly
  • Support the pro-active recruitment and development of the best account teams within the company
  • Utilise people productively to maximise service for the client and income for the agency
  • Manage the performance of the Account Executives/Managers and any other direct business reports to continuously achieve or better income targets set
  • Create clear development plans for Account Executives and direct business reports in line with business and individual needs
  • Manage and monitor the income from all client accounts and the brand experience sheet
  • Ensure invoicing and financial administration is of a high standard to keep income coming into the agency
  • Achieve or exceed all financial targets for the team
  • Drive all daily business activity towards the achievement of business targets
  • Drive the ethos and cost control, margin management and income growth through the team
  • Ensure client and supplier billings are matched and aligned


The successful candidate must have/be:

  • Bachelor of Science degree / Marketing, PR, or Communications degree
  • 6 years’ experience as an Account Executive
  • 2 years’ experience as Client Service Director / Account Director
  • BTL/EVENTS Agency experience – essential (Not just from client side)
  • Advertising/Marketing agency experience – ESSENTIAL
  • Ongoing industry courses to ensure up to date on latest technology, media, branding and advertising development
