We have a tremendous job opportunity for a junior-mid Communication Officer at a noteworthy NPO based in Cape Town. This is a “roll up your sleeves” position and the Communication Officer will have their hand in everything from communications strategy and implementing on-brand content plans to engaging with hospital staff, patients and parents, working directly with the press and leading event marketing opportunities in a dynamic environment. The primary purpose of a Communications Officer is to effectively promote the overall brand, fundraising activities, and reputation to retain existing and acquire new donors and ultimately reach fundraising goals. Strategic communication with various donor segments is key to this role because relational messages are linked to how the NPO is perceived, how they communicate their “why” – (the impact made on little patients’ lives) and how they value their generous current and new donors. Responsibilities

Include but are not limited to:

  • Create and implement a targeted, communication strategy through in-depth understanding of the organisational strategy and donor segments (Corporates, Individuals, Community Fundraisers, Legacy, Trusts & Foundations)
  • Research and identify PR, Events (in-person and digital) and Advertising opportunities
  • Implement a proactive international PR plan which include pro bono advertising and publicity opportunities
  • Plan and implement internal and external organisation and donor events
  • Manage events, PR and advertising budget with significant ROI
  • Reputation management, media placements and pitching stories
  • Visit the hospital regularly to engage with hospital staff, patients, and parents to collect storytelling content
  • Writing all donor and internal comms for the organisation i.e. press releases, talking points, scripts, advertising and other materials
  • Demonstrate flexibility, with a willingness to respond effectively and rapidly, particularly calmly and solution-focused at times of crisis
  • Coordinate external & Internal communications flow (memos, stakeholder communications, internal campaign information with the organisation Team, emails etc).
  • Collaboration with the Content Creator and videographer/ photographer to coordinate photography, radio and video, production in- and outside the hospital
  • Monitor PR and Advertising metrics and monthly reporting
  • Assist with Community Fundraising activities and Ambassador/Influencer communication activities in collaboration with Content Creator
  • Ensure that the comms strategy achieves the organisation’s goals.

Requirements

The successful candidate must have/be:

  • Public Relations Degree/Diploma or related qualification
  • Qualification in Marketing Communication and Project Management will be an added advantage
  • Minimum 5 years working experience in Public Relations and proven track record of creating and executing successful communications strategies
  • Highly skilled in advanced MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to be bilingual or multilingual in any if the 11 official languages will be an added advantage
  • Extensive knowledge of Public Relation principles and strategies
  • Extensive knowledge of the international Media landscape
  • Proven experience in Reputation Management
  • Experience in analysing PR data and report writing
  • Excellent public speaking skills
  • Excellent emotive written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships with media contacts and outlets
  • Ability to influence and negotiate
  • Excellent Project Management skills, deadline driven and attention to detail
  • Ability to identify newsworthy content, PR opportunities and seeking high-level placements in the relevant media platforms
  • Experience in in-person and digital Event Planning and facilitating logistics of events with strong project management experience
  • Understand the synergy between PR and Marketing
  • A clear understanding of the power of branding and USP in PR communication
  • Ability to shape the organisation’s image and values, as well as the appropriate methods to communicate them to the public
  • Understanding of all content types and communication platforms
  • Creative out of the box thinking – displaying innovative ways of working
  • Must have driver’s license and own vehicle
  • Passionate about doing acts of service
  • Displaying of personal values that are aligned with the values of the NPO (dynamic, kindness, accountability and collaboration)
  • Superb communications and people skills
  • Ability to adjust to any kind of (situation) and to display emotional resilience in stressful situations
  • Comfortable going into a hospital for work-related purposes during the pandemic
