Packaging Designer – Creative (Integrated)

Calling all power packaging specialists! We have a fabulous hybrid opportunity for a Mid-Senior Packaging Designer to join the team at a creative design studio’s northern suburb, Johannesburg office.
We’re looking for a highly organised conceptual thinker who is strategically minded with print, packaging, typography, and brand design experience along with the ability to coordinate and guide the studio.
Our ideal candidate understands the respective needs of the client, the agency, the brand, and the people involved, so that they can ensure alignment to all requirements – especially the creative solutions.
This exciting role will see you reinforcing the creative team in developing creatively appealing, high-end award-winning packaging design solutions, which are to brief, budget and time. You will perform the role of a studio lead in the agency, as per the KPIs, but you will be tasked with overseeing the day-to-day tasks and the smaller, less complex projects by interpreting the brief and resulting design solution from a practical point of view.
The agency works on a 3 days in office and 2 days at home hybrid model.

Requirements
The successful candidate must have/be:
- Design Degree/Diploma or equivalent qualification.
- 6-8 years’ previous experience in an agency/studio environment
- Highly conceptual – essential
- Strong Packaging Design skills with knowledge of print and production in the packaging industry
- A good understanding of working with big brands
- Proficient in the Adobe Creative Suite and have great Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop skills – illustration skills a plus
- Strategic thinker who can apply their mind to packaging design solutions
- Ability to work independently and confidently complete a job from start to finish – critical
- Excellent organisational skills which includes team coordination
- Eyes and ears on the ground for the design team/ECD
- Able to assist client service in urgent calls/client discussions or explanations when ECD cannot attend
- Support the team when managing external resource/suppliers e.g. illustrators, photographer, copywriters, strategists etc
- Ability to give and take advice and handle smaller reviews
- Always up to date on market trends, consumer needs/insights and product categories/what’s new in stores – in order to draw from this knowledge when determining the structure of a presentation, how to support a design solution, or elevate a design
- Checking of work/FA/presentations before sending to ECD, Client Service, and Client.

- Excellent creative crafting skills – with an interest in ideas, typology, layout, colour, composition, materials etc.
- Good exposure to Artwork/Repro/Print processes
- A thinking designer passionate about design in all it’s different facets
- Good team player, who can handle jobs from inception of brief through to handing over to Finished Art department.
