Financial Controller: Conservation NPO – Hybrid, Stellenbosch

We have a compelling, hybrid opportunity for an experienced Mid-weight Financial Controller at a wonderful conservation NPO based in Stellenbosch.

This is an ideal position for an Accountant with an excellent financial management and internal auditing  track record to join a dynamic team who are doing meaningful work in the field of conservation in southern Africa.

The NPO obtains funding from various donors to fund projects and the spending of such funds must follow donor procurement rules which are specific for each donor and project. As Financial Controller you will be required to act as back-stopper for financial management in the different projects and portfolios, for financed projects, and to ensure quality control.

This hybrid role reports directly to the CFO and will see you in-office 1 day a week. Candidates must have a valid SA passport and be able to travel into Africa.

Responsibilities

  • Accounting Management for Accounts Payable including reviewing and approving payments
  • Prepare, review, reconcile and analyse accounting records and other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness, and conformance to reporting and procedural standards
  • Oversee the efficiencies of the accounting systems in line with best practice as well as oversee the implementation of relevant policies and controls
  • Conduct annual internal audit reviews on project accounting processes and systems and follow up on suggested enhancements and corrective measures. These reviews will require travel to African countries where projects are implemented
  • Analyse business operations, trends, costs, revenues, financial commitments, and obligations, to project future revenues and expenses or to provide advice
  • Oversee financial management of projects and report to management regarding the finances of their projects
  • Oversee and manage budgets, preparing reports that compare budgeted costs to actual costs
  • A competitive salary package will be negotiated, based on qualifications and experience.

Requirements

The successful candidate must have/be:

  • BCom/BCompt – Finance
  • Audit background and articles completed CAA preferable
  • 10+ years in the financial sector, but with excellent financial management and internal auditing    track record.
  • Experience with managing programmes with multiple donors.
  • Experience with institutional financial reporting practices, rules, and procedures (will be highly advantageous)
  • Good communicator and ability to build/work with a diverse multi-disciplinary team and, crucially, to always embrace and embody the organisation’s culture and values
  • Technologically astute, with ability to establish strong KPI frameworks both for self- measurement and portfolio performance
  • Experience with creating financial statements
  • Excellent accounting software user and administration skills
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Valid SA passport and able to travel into Africa.
